*BACK*....................BONAGUIL....................*BACK*
Built late 15th C by the somewhat eccentric Berenger de Roquefeuil as an impregnable and comfortable stronghold, it was considered obsolete before its completion and was never attacked. Parly ruined, it was bought in 1761 by Marguerite de Fumel who restored it without significant alteration except for the addition of comfortable apartments. Plundered and partly destroyed during the Revolution - including the spiteful destruction of many magnificent stone carvings - it fell into oblivion. Bought by the town of Fumel in 1860, stabilised and partly restored, it is a magnificent visit for all castle lovers. Classified Historic Monument. Less than an hour from Gaytou.
"It is so perfect that it seems almost ridiculous to call it a ruin" - T E Lawrence, 1908
